The Shoes You Need In Your Capsule Wardrobe

As we all know, shoes are an investment, which is why it is crucial to choose a versatile pair that will contribute to shaping your personalised timeless wardrobe. The perfect shoe for this purpose is the ballet flat, and if you haven’t already, then you need to get your hands on a pair. Ballet flats have recently resurfaced in popularity, reminiscent of their trend in the 90s. In this blog post, I will cover how to style them and provide information on where you can find your own pair.

One way to style these ballet flats is by pairing them with a skirt or dress. This look can be casual when paired with oversized jumpers or fabrics that have more give. Alternatively, you can create a more formal look by introducing structured skirts and blazers. I personally enjoy both of these styles and find them versatile for both everyday casual wear and business attire. Another style that I particularly like is the combination of ballet flats with a midi denim skirt. The dark denim and red shoe complement each other so well, and I find the proportions of the top, low-rise skirt, and leg to be flattering and sophisticated.

The next style inspiration that I have chosen for this blog revolves around the croquette and ballet core aesthetics. These two vibes are currently very trendy and embody a delicate and feminine energy. To embrace this aesthetic, one can style the ballet flats with bows. Whether tied into the hair in various ways or subtly incorporated into clothing items, bows serve as the perfect accessory to enhance an outfit. Another option is to pair the shoes with longer socks, as depicted in the image below. This creates a preppy look and helps elongate your legs when wearing flat shoes.

Another essential fashion element to style ballet flats with is a classic pair of jeans. For a casual look, I would recommend wearing oversized jeans that reach the floor, creating a baggy silhouette. Cuffing the bottom of the jeans, as shown below, is an excellent option and happens to be my favorite outfit in this section. For a mature and sophisticated vibe, opt for form-fitting jeans or ankle-length jeans. These styles pair perfectly with plain tops and jumpers, enhancing the classy aesthetic.

For a more editorial and edgy styling of ballet flats, colored and patterned socks/tights are the way to go. This look truly captures the energy from the early seasons of Gossip Girl at Constance. In my opinion, this style works best when paired with skirts, following the advice mentioned above. While it may push the boundaries of comfort for some, I believe that this trend will gain popularity over time.

If this blog post has inspired you to invest in ballet flats, you may be wondering where to find them. I would recommend checking out charity shops and going thrifting, as this is a sustainable and environmentally-friendly option. On the other hand, if you prefer a brand new pair and are looking for a long-term investment, Chanel ballet flats are considered the most timeless option. However, they can be quite expensive and may exceed most budgets. In that case, you can explore brands like ASOS and M&S to find more affordable options and get started on your ballet flat collection.

  1. I’m a Baby Boomer who has worn ballet flats since the 1980’s and still wears them even today! Actually, I picked up a couple pairs for this Summer and Fall! I enjoyed your commentary and though I have never watched an episode of Gossip Girls, my name is indeed, Constance ❤️
